This worked well with the darker tone of “Prisoner of Azkaban” and the subsequent films, which saw Dumbledore facing off against Voldemort and dealing with increasingly complex political maneuvering. But director Alfonso Cuarón managed to work around it by changing up Dumbledore’s portrayal slightly – where Harris played him as calm and grandfatherly (with just a hint of mischief), Gambon brought more energy and intensity to the character. Of course, switching actors mid-franchise is always going to be tricky from a narrative perspective. ![]() So once it became clear that Harris wouldn’t be returning for future films, producers turned back to Gambon and offered him the role. By “Chamber of Secrets,” he had even started treatment for Hodgkin’s disease. He was in his 70s during the filming of “Philosopher’s Stone,” and his health was reportedly starting to decline.
